How to Use Positive Thinking to Get What You Want

I’ve been ultra-focused recently on mindset and personal development to optimize my thinking and shift the way I see life and circumstances in general. This has brought me to problem solving and creatively exploring the options to make better, healthier and more positive decisions in my life.

I didn’t have the most productive last month – so what’s a better option to pull myself out of a funk than viewing the world a little differently, right?

How we think about our lives and the world around us influences the quality of life we live. Our thoughts determine everything that we do and our feelings on a day to day basis.

When you’re thinking differently, you may begin working differently than normal. You may not want to be around people that are negative influences in your life, or you may want to stop eating pizza at 10 am every Wednesday morning. Your thoughts directly influence your actions and with the right mindset, you may be able to change negative patterns.

Can changing how you think about your life really alter the course of your life? Maybe. But how do you get started? How can you start to think about life and circumstances in more positive ways?

First, address unhelpful or negative thinking patterns.

I’m not suggesting we ignore what’s going on around us, but we can change how we see normal day to day tasks and aspects of our life. You can also get into the habit of thinking more creatively. Think about your life in a way that allows you to get the most out of any situation. How can you benefit from what’s going on in your life?

Next, look at ALL aspects of a situation.

Consider the past, present, and future to provide you with the full picture. Examine the past and use past knowledge and experiences to help improve future decisions. It helps to learn from previous setbacks or problems and adjust your current course of action in order to move forward. You can try journaling, meditation, or any type of self-reflection.

Looking into similar situations that you’ve been through and asking yourself about the decisions you made will help you to answer the question: What could I have done differently to get a better outcome? How can that experience help me in the future?

You’re more likely to make positive decisions moving forward when you’ve really thought about and considered your options. It’s all about awareness and understanding on how and where you could improve.

The next aspect to focus on is future events.

Yes, I realize that we (all) aren’t psychic, but exploring alternate courses of action can help provide clarity about what lies ahead. It may help you to spot opportunities or avoid mistakes. Think ahead and consider: How will this affect me? How does this decision influence my future?

Make sense of your surroundings and gain an understanding of the people, events and circumstances of your life. You can create your future and this new-found knowledge can help you achieve the goals that help you to reach whatever it is that you want in your life.

If you pay attention to patterns, along with how they impact you and use a more positive outlook, you may realize that the more negative aspects of your life could easily be avoided or changed. If not, don’t be afraid to dig a little deeper to get to the root of the problem. Turning a negative into a positive brings a whole new awareness to a situation.

Don’t let your past hold you back. Learn and gain a better understanding of yourself and why you do the things you do. That will help you to make decisions that will get you to the place that you want to be and get what you want in life.

Remember that it’s also okay to forgive yourself. You CAN move on from a negative or less than ideal situation and create the future that you deserve.

We don’t have to let our problems overcome us, we can control the outcomes of most situations.

All you have to do is make a commitment and take responsibility for changing your life, one thought at a time.
